Criminalise Blackmail

The Parliament of Stratham enacts:

Section 1. Short Title

(1) This Act is the Blackmail Act.

Section 2. Commencement

(1) All provisions shall come into effect upon passage of the bill.

Section 3. Reasoning

(1) Blackmail is currently not illegal. This bill will make it so threats, against a player's in-game character, to gain something of value will be criminalised.

Section 4. Definition

(1) Attempting to gain something of value (for example krunas, votes) from a player by threatening to reveal, to a third party, substantially true information that is embarrassing, damaging, or incriminating.

(a) While revealing this information is not a crime in itself, demanding something of value in exchange for withholding this information is considered blackmail, and therefore criminal behaviour.

(b) The Blackmail Act does not cover threats to reveal real-life information, nor anything staff related. Blackmail Act only covers role play aspects such as criminal records, evidence of corruption, etc.

Section 5. Punishment

(1) Punishment will be:

A minimum of 15 minutes jail time and at least a fine of $1000, at the discretion of the courts.
